I just started reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and so far I’m hooked! I think any gamer or geek who reads this will agree with me when I say that right now, I’m still reeling over the many references to some of my favorite things. In fact, I just want to jump into the OASIS and start playing.
This book is incredibly inventive. I also find myself relating to the main character quite often. The desire to escape into an alternate reality is a common theme in the book and in the lives of many people. Most of us don’t live in a vertical trailer park during an energy crisis, but life gets hard.
At this point, I don’t think I can do a sound analysis on the work. I’ll have to get back to you when I’ve finished reading, though I will say the book draws a lot of parallels to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. So that’s a motif I’ll delve more into in future posts. Right now I just want to hop in a teleporter in OASIS and check out the Firefly universe before settling down in Middle Earth.
If any of you reading love sci-fi, fantasy or gaming (be it table-top or video games) I highly recommend this book. So far, I love it and I’m sure you will too. I will say that if you don’t know at least something about gaming and fantasy culture, this will go right over your head. The content is filled with references to real-world books, games and film.
